Ping Pong, Pizza and Bands? by Lyn2

That's the ideal Friday night, and it's business as usual at Comet Ping Pong on Connecticut Avenue NW. This intriguing venue has great wood fired pizza, funky decor, and a full bar up, but that's not all.  There's also free ping pong and occasionally live late night music. The Urban Verbs did a sneak preview here once so this place is worth keeping an eye on.


This Friday, it's 7 Door Sedan - who are turning out new songs and continually refining their sounds. They'll be joined by Silver Spring's Ravenous and Tiny Animals from New York. This is a solid line-up, and it's FREE at 10:30 pm!

Please note the kitchen closes at 10:30 on Friday so come early if you are hungry.

It's Summer in the City

Summer in DC- what do we get?

Hazy hot and humid- hopefully lots of days at the beach. Ever optimistic gardeners digging up their yards and dreaming of back yard tomatos. Balmy nights, fireflies, and lots of free music. Later this month Fort Reno will start rolling again, but in the meantime-The Nighthawks- a long time DC favorite- are unplugged this Thursday 6-9 p.m. in Rockville Town Center.

Holiday Weekend Options on the Home Front

You don't have to battle the beach traffic this weekend because there are plenty of music options here at home. Here are two:

Greenland brings their powerful sound to the Velvet Lounge on Friday night. They're a local treasure and have a new EP, "Cleanly Shaven" out. Also with intriguing locals Frau Eva and Orbit to Leslie and The Armchairs - both from Philadelphia.

Things will be rocking in Rockville given the wide array of local and out of town talent on several stages Saturday at Rockville's 22nd annual 3 day Hometown Holidays festival in Rockville Town Center. Click here and then click on each day's schedule. Highlights on Saturday include the Nighthawks, Ruthie and the Wranglers, Billy Coulter Band, Patty Reese. The weekend events include a parade and a variety of other activities.

Tiny Desk Unit- Big Party @ 9:30 Club

It's been a remarkable year already. First came the snowpocalypse in February, and now we have DC's own 9:30 Club's AMAZING line up for the 30th anniversary to end all anniversaries- this MONDAY May 31. Here's the line up according to the 9:30 Club's latest press release:

Tiny Desk Unit – the first band to play at the original 9:30 Club.  Its keyboard player is 

no stranger to the new club. It’s Bob Boilen, of NPR – the guy that broadcasts All 

Songs Considered shows from the 9:30 Club for the entire world to hear. 

The Fleshtones – these CBGB grads were the very first band then-independent 

promoter Seth Hurwitz booked at the 9:30 Club, back when Carter was in office.  Since 

then, Seth and partner Rich Heinecke bought the Club, Jimmy went on to start Habitat 

for Humanity and the Fleshtones have been doing what they do: recording and rocking 

out on the road. 

Tommy Keene – A Bethesda native, who played the original 9:30 Club with

Razz before launching a successful solo career, known for being one of the most 

critically acclaimed authentic power pop acts. 

The Slickee Boys – the punk-psychedelic punk rock band holds the all-time record of 

most times playing the 9:30 Club with 79 appearances.  Monday will be number 80! 

The Psychedelic Furs – the very first “Big Act” booked at the 9:30 Club, the English 

rock band was one of the most successful acts spawned from the punk and new wave 

scenes. 

Marti Jones & Don Dixon - back when radio “broke” artists, D.C.’s alternative station 

WHFS catapulted this duo to fame, and they packed the Club with fans eager to hear 

hits like “Praying Mantis”. 

Clutch  - This Germantown, Md,, -based, internationally-traveling metal funk band cut its 

teeth at the 9:30 Club, and returns every year to sold out houses. The band just 

released a two-disc DVD, “Clutch Live at the 9:30 Club”, with material going back as far 

as 1991. 

Trouble Funk - one of the best live bands ever gave the 9:30 Club patrons their first 

taste of DC’s Go-Go sound.  Like they say, once you go Go-Go, you never go back. 

The Evens – A duo of Amy Farina and partner Ian MacKaye.  While known around the 

world as the front man of Minor Threat and Fugazi, and a bastion of rock integrity in 

the music industry, he’s always been “just Ian” at the 9:30 Club. 

Justin Jones – represents the future of the 9:30 Club, with his soul-filled Americana 

sound, Justin has opened the club a dozen times for acts like ZZ Top, Loretta Lynn and 

Sheryl Crow.  His next CD will be the 1st release on the 9:30 Club record label later 

this summer. 

The Pietasters  - they met at Virginia Tech, horns in hand 20 years ago – and the soul 

ska band still comes back home to the 9:30 Club, playing to full houses every time. 

Ted Leo – though he was born in Indiana and grew up in Jersey, Washington, D.C. and 

the 9:30 Club are running through the veins of this indie rock doc and his current band 

The Pharmacists.  Ted played the club regularly as a member of local faves Chisel in 

the early-mid 1990s. 

Bob Mould -  in all his incarnations, starting with influential hardcore punk pioneers 

Hüsker Dü, Bob has always considered the 9:30 Club his home.  In other worlds, 

getting the blowoff is a bad thing.  But thanks to Bob Mould, it’s a D.C. favorite.  Bob, 

who lived in D.C. for years, takes his Blowoff dance party to the 9:30 Club every month, 

and now he takes that show on the road.

They Will Make You Want to Holler

Yell County is named for bandmember Joel Maupin's home county in Arkansas. This happens to be where my Mom was from, and there is one local legend about people yelling at each other across a mountain or something, thus the county's name. I'm not sure if this is true, but Yell County will get you rocking Thursday night at Iota with Heypenny from Nashville.

The Yachtsmen Plan to Rock Iota

Mark Noone has had many incarnations including Slickee Boy, Wanktone, Wrangler, Troubadour and Hula Monster, but his latest brainchild The Yachtsmen is a  dream band come true. Here he gets to act out his alter ego- Thurston Howell the Third while doing original rock. The amazing thing is he somehow came up with two other band mates-Joel App and John Penovich who had the same Gilligonian vision. (Call me crazy, but I think that's a bit remarkable.) Taking full advantage of the shtick the Yachtsmen set sail this Monday night for a 50 minute tour at Iota. Opening will be Glasglow which feature two uber talented brothers from New Orleans. Something for everyone, ladies and gentlemen. Show time on the early side- 8:30 p.m.

The Last Train Is Home

It used to be you could see Last Train Home  headlining more often than not at Iota, but since DC homeboy and band leader, Eric Brace moved to Nashville, he has gotten involved in all kinds of musical projects. (imagine that, in Nashville, of all places) Lately though he has been busy bailing out his basement and helping out neighbors after record flooding hit his new home town destroying homes and lives.
So welcome back Eric and company for the not so common upcoming  LAST TRAIN HOME weekend at Iota. This includes the wildly popular Sunday matinee- a magnet for junior bar flies in training. 
Please come out and show your support for our old friend who just keeps on getting better as time goes on. (Those guitar lessons really paid off.) Set times 9 p.m. this Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. As always DC ROCKS shows stay under budget- tickets just $12 for real live entertainment.

How Much Does DC Rock?

Some people think they know a lot about Washington, but one very important thing to know is that  the Beatles' first live concert was here, right here in Washington DC at the Washington Coliseum on February 11, 1964. (Believe me, I would have been there if I had known how to drive in kindergarten.)


Sadly now, the Beatles of that day are literally gone, but the nationally acclaimed Fab Faux is coming to LISNER Auditorium this SATURDAY night with the sole purpose of bringing their music back to life. This group has gotten rave reviews, appeared on Letterman and sold out Radio City Music Hall, and  DC ROCKS has been given a pair of tickets to our loyal readers.

It's A Honky Tonk Suburb

JV is the kind of place that will surprise you.
First of all the location is in a suburban shopping center which screams nondescript.
You have to know JV is there to stop for anything except maybe the Baskin Robbins next door. The surprise is JV boasts an atmosphere that is genuine Honky Tonk  with no apologies, and you will soon forget you are in a godforsaken spot on Route 50 just down from the circle of hell known as Seven Corners.
Next the music. 
If you are there before the band you will wonder where the heck they are going to fit much more than a harmonica player, but they do. I have seen at least five pieces. (Still if you sit in a front booth,  you can make a request without leaving your seat.)
Last amazing thing- how good the bands are especially when someone like guitar guru Dan Hovey shows up. Dan will be playing there this THURSDAY with, of all things, the Dan Hovey Band. 
As Dan says they will "start swinging about 9 and rocking about  about 20 minutes later."

Surf Is Most Definitely Up This Saturday

East Coast surf may not be the legendary stuff that the West Coast is famous for, but that doesn't mean we can't celebrate the upcoming beach season with great local surf music.Dust off your board, get out your Flojos, and prepare to hit Iota for the Space Cossacks reunion show this Saturday night. (By the by Baltimoreans can catch the show Friday at Metro Gallery. These guys have such good posters I have to put them both up)

 

Here is the scoop from Catherine Gray of the Space Cossacks:

"We half jokingly talked about getting back together more than a year ago and decided to turn it into a ten year reunion tour from the time we disbanded. As we discussed it further we were overwhelmed by the positive encouragement to make it a reality. Ten to fifteen years ago there was nowhere near the web presence and social networking opportunities there are now. In the time we were apart, we acquired a much larger fan base all over the world that we never thought possible.

We are very excited to be together as friends and band mates again and play our songs for old fans and new. Unfortunately, it's probably a one time thing since we are spread over four states. But you never know... We will just ride this wave until the next one comes along!"

Opening for the Cossacks will be another great inland surf band- the Atomic Mosquitos. They will get the party rolling and are reportedly "stoked" to play with their old friends after all these years.

Joe Rocks X Two

Two bands are playing the Fenton Street Market in Silver Spring this Saturday afternoon, and here are the facts (just the facts, ma'am) from Joe Dolan:

"Beatnik Flies Unplugged: featuring Ken Bugg-bass, The Bidjje-percussion, Mark Langosch-flute, and myself on guitar and vocals.
The Vi-Kings Unplugged: Bill Euler, Stock Wilson and myself, all Guitars and vocals."
The market goes from 9:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. Music starts at noon. Flies first-Vi-Kings second."

Here's beyond the facts- The Flies have been playing for years and years, and we are grateful that they are still at it because, as that slightly tired Nice and Easy expression goes- they're not gettin' older, they're gettin' better.

And while a lot of musicians might think about gearing down later in life, Joe Dolan isn't one of them. He got involved with the Vi-kings-all former schoolmates- as a project for their reunion at Walt Whitman High- class of '70. (Go Team)
Practice went way better than expected which is why you, too, will have the opportunity to see them "unplugged" this Saturday- and the full band at Bangkok Blues later this June.

And Now For Something Completely Different.....

From the UK, of course and also from here. An English dance tradition - the "ale" - descends on our city streets this weekend. Perhaps like you, I thought "ale" referred to a beverage like my current favorite Founders Red's Rye IPA. But an "ale" is also a festive performance of Morris dances, -a traditional English folk dancing done to fiddle music dating back at least to the 16th century. The idea of dancers taking over public places really caught my eye, perhaps because it has a May Day pagan feel to it.

Local dancers will join the Bows and Belles Northwest Team from Colchester UK to perform "The Three Branches of Government Ale" all around D.C. this weekend. Locations and times on Saturday and Sunday can be found at the link above, and they actually correspond to the 3 branches of government. You can help preserve our democracy by remembering what they are and meditating on the elegance of The Federalist Papers while you groove to the dancing.

We Told You So

It's not like we didn't tell Prabir and the Substitutes they would be famous someday. Now disbanded, the band can still take pride in having "Five Little Pieces" used in a promo piece for a DC-based sitcom. We're not sure what to make of this possible show, nor the reference to the "hipster infested E Street Cinema," but our adopted Richmond friends are now creating new music in Prabir/Goldrush and The Trillions.

Saturday: It's Alive !

You may not have been there then when they recorded Billy's favorite live albums (see above)- but you can be a part of it now. No, not New York, but the D.C. scene. Billy Coulter is recording his next CD this Saturday night with friends John Penovich and Brian Simms joining the band- and you, yes, you will play the "audience."

It all takes place at the Franklin Park Performing Arts Center way out there in Loudon County where you can actually see a lot more stars up there in the sky and the waning full moon to boot. The concerts are held in a converted dairy barn so take a trip out to the country and chill, and rock. Tickets $15. Show starts at 8 p.m.

Now Rockville Rocks on Friday

Strathmore Arts Center used to throw great outdoor events featuring local bands on the lawn which soon grew too big for the neighbors to handle. (I remember the Nils Lofgren tribute looked like a mini Woodstock on the Pike.) Now they are trying something different inside the Mansion with a concert and art series called "Friday Night Eclectic" featuring music, arts and cocktails- always a winning combination.

This Friday don't miss the appropriately eclectic and original rock of the Cravin' Dogs.
Plus artists Bobbi Kittner, Sam Kittner, Katja Toporski and Rod Glover will have exhibits of their work in the Mansion galleries. A cash bar kicks off the night with $2 PBRs from 8-9 p.m- the rock show starts at 9. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. All ages.

GHz Cycles Back

DC ROCKS has always admired the sound of GHZ, a band that can really capture a time gone by when they cover classic bands like Cream and Hendrix, but now they have something new going on. It's their own CD, "Morbid Curiosity," which harkens back to all that great rock-but with solid original tunes that make you THINK you might have missed something from Wishbone Ash or the like.

See for your own bad self this Friday evening when GHz has a CD release party- in real time- at Bangkok Blues in Falls Church.

Cars Make Way for Dancing at Glen Echo

Glen Echo has always been a cool place to hang out. Back in 1881 the Chautauqua movement came to stay. Clara Barton built a house as a Red Cross head quarters in 1891 and lived there until her death. In 1899 much of the land was rented and became an amusement park which lasted well into the sixties. After this enterprise was abandoned, the National Park Service started managing the land, and artists soon drifted back again building yurts for their studios and hosting music festivals. Now Glen Echo Park has had a full face lift. The Denzel carousel and the Spanish ballroom are restored, and the Bumper Car Pavilion may not have cars anymore, but there's lots of action when dances are held there.


This Friday night band members of The Grandsons and Little Red and the Renegades will combine forces with Dancing by the Bayou. Zydeco dance lessons start at 8, and the music goes from 9-12. $15 will get you in for a lot of fun-plus you can be a part of local history.

What Happens on 4-20?

Got you there... the really cool thing that's happening is a new free download from Prabir/Goldrush. "It's a Hit." So, whatever else you do this day, be sure and see what our friends from Richmond are up to now. You will like it. Don't wait for a lazy Sunday.

Late Notice: It's a New Deal for Sunday

I am in Manhattan, but if I were home I would go to the New Deal Cafe in old Greenbelt and see Ken Moss and friends and Color School. Old Greenbelt itself is a unique find built during the New Deal as a model for walkable/livable communities - thus the Cafe's name. No cover - good coffee, beverages and food are available. It seems like a good Sunday night thing to do. Check out the Old Greenbelt Theater too - last of its kinds. I heart Old Greenbelt and New York. New York has better pizza.

Local DC Rocks the State This Sunday

Take Our Advice

Shortstack's got a CD coming out and a release party at Black Cat on Friday. These guys will captivate you with a sound that's rootsy but new. They will be joined by Suns of Guns and Birds of Avalon from Chapel Hill. I took Bill Hanke's recommendation to see them last time they played Black Cat, and it was the best advice I got all year.

Home Week

DC home boys, Daniel McCormick and Jacob Long are back in town with Mi Ami- a somewhat ethereal yet throbbing San Francisco group that pretty much defies any sort of pigeon holing. Daniel and Jacob, formerly of Black Eyes, (brought to you by Dischord records) make up two of this trio which definitely has roots in the punk scene. Catch their act at the Velvet Lounge this Thursday night and trade in your tax frenzy for a saner sort of diversion.

Been a Long Time Since We Rock and Rolled

It feels like ages since I saw 7 Door Sedan and Sister Ex, so Tuesday night's Black Cat show is welcome. You won't hear either of these bands for a little while so if you've been saying "next time" the time is now. 7 Door's hypnotic sounds will be back after a hiatus, and Sister Ex is working on those brilliant songs in the studio this spring.

It's also Jane Henderson's birthday celebration.

Tuesday night, Black Cat Backstage, 9 p.m. And like every show at the Black Cat, but unlike most others, it's all ages venue, and you can play pool in the Red Room in between bands.
Show the kids you're not to old too rock on a week night. $8 cover.

Breakfast Can Rock With The Loggers

Stock Wilson wants you to know that The Loggers will be raising a ruckus in front of Port City Java at Eastern Market on Capitol Hill Saturday morning April 10th from 10am to noon. Come on down and shop the market, grab a latte and dance!

Get Your Groove On

Silver Spring has been sprung. The once faltering downtown business district has been revived and revamped. It now features a wildly popular faux Main Street lined with chain stores and restaurants. (Ever the contrarian, I tend to haunt places like the Quarry House (1937) Dale Music (1950) and Tastee Diner(1946) all local old school hold outs.)

One welcome change, however, is that Silver Spring has become the shopping/swapping district for vinyl. The CD Game Exchange, Roadhouse Oldies and now Joe's Record Paradise (which migrated from Rockville) are all within a few blocks of each other. Joe has been pushing vinyl since 1974, and the shop is now in a former pool hall which is an enormous space. Look for the grand opening party this Saturday with live music from 3-6 p.m.

Some Don't Like It Hot

It was 78 degrees in Washington when I went to bed last night which is just plain wrong in my book. Record breaking heat here where, not too long ago, it seemed like it would never stop snowing.
I am not ready for August in April, and neither are my lettuce seedlings, but at least by the weekend things should be back to our regular spring weather programming. Wade with me if you will through the pollen and catch Little Red and the Renegades this Friday night at Haydee's in a city where spring really is an amazing thing. Little Red brings you the sound of New Orleans without the plane fare, no baggage fee and no cover. 9 p.m.

Nunchucks Rock DC

It was a busy night a couple of weeks ago at the Velvet Lounge. As usual there were three bands playing, and as usual the crowd had thinned out by the time the third band- the Nunchucks- came on. I was under the weather, but I like the Nunchucks and wanted to stay for a song or two at least, but then their energy filled the room. I didn't leave. I couldn't bring myself to move until they were finished. I don't know when it happened, but they went from a decent band to something else. Self described as "the best band you never heard of"-it's true, and their new materiel is strong. Nunchucks will rock again with Midnight Spin, Downtown Harvest and the Blackbells this Friday night on H Street at the Rock & Roll Hotel. (See their website for band links.) $10

Sunday Is Punkday Matinee!

Sleeper Agent, XMC and Dead Mechanical-three bands for just five bucks at the Quarry House this Sunday afternoon starting at 3 p.m. See old friends - get a good dose of live music and have a beer or two to wash down those tater tots. What a great way to avoid thinking about Monday.

Live Theater Rocks

Nick Hornby's novel High Fidelity is about a bewildered, love lorn man who sees his romantic life as a series of mix tapes and Top Five lists. The book was written and set in England. The movie version, starring John Cusack, was made and set here in America, and the musical.... the musical? I, for one, am not a big fan, but a friend of mine was playing guitar in the Landless Theatre Company's production at DCAC, and tickets were cheap-just $25. So I went, not expecting much, and I was enthralled.
The cast was excellent- not a weak performance in the bunch. It was funny and dark and very well done- as clever as its title. Don't expect the familiar songs of the movie- the music is all original, and the band rocks. And it's not just me-critics and friends alike- from the curmudgeon to the consummate musician- everyone was impressed. The Landless production is back, for a very limited run, at The Warehouse- this Friday and Saturday only. Still only $25 in advance, and what a deal. Don't miss it!

Monday Can End on a Good Note with a Little Help From Your Friends

My friend, Bobby Lee Birdsong, (gotta love that name) has been from DC to Austin and back- not to mention a bunch of stops in between before settling down here. He can tune your piano, talk about any number of subjects and he plays with a bunch of bands. This MONDAY you can catch him at Iota with two of those bands- an acoustic version of the Walkaways, plus Amy Sullivan and the Whisky Darlings. Jamie Potter will open keeping it all in the family. ( He's married to Amy.)
Three bands for ten bucks in a great little club. You can't go wrong.

We at DC ROCKS promised to keep you posted on the journeys of the former members of Richmond's Prabir and the Substitutes, and this Friday night we can do even better. We can send you down to the Velvet Lounge on U Street where The Trillions will play their very first DC show opening for local rock faves- The Nunchucks, and a band we've been wanting to see more of The Blue Line . To get a better idea of what's going on with the Trillions, you better read this description.

And, believe it or not, you've got another great choice just up the road at Asylum. Sister Ex will join Redline Addiction at this 18th Street venue that it's possible you have missed. It's a great place to see a show and Sister Ex is going to be perfect for this club where you can sit at the bar, sit at a table or jump around if you want. We don't know Redline Addiction but the name makes me want to check them out.

You can do both of these shows if you've got on your walking shoes. Or pick one. But go out Friday night and support friends from near and far on what promises to be a lovely spring evening.

Out of This World Rock Show Monday

Mark Noone - Slickee Boy, Troubadour, King Soul man, Hula Monster is coming out of the basement (and his clothes closet) with his newest incarnation the Yachtsmen this MONDAY night at Galaxy Hut- one of my favorite tiny haunts thanks to former owner and long time ethereal rocker Alice Despard who will also be playing this extraordinary double bill. It might be a Monday, but this show is a must see. Local rock history will be made before your eyes-don't miss it. Starts early -9 p.m.- so you can hit the pillow, too.

Rustbuckit and XMC to Cause Spring Fever Saturday

Saturday nights are made for bands like Rustbuckit and XMC. These are musicians you've no doubt seen or heard of and they'll be at Iota this Saturday, March 13. Rustbuckit are loud, fast and you can dance for real or in your mind. XMC are the same only different. You won't find a more talented rocking bunch of musicians to wash away the work-week blues and put you in that spring fever set of mind. That's Iota in Arlington, Virginia near the Clarendon Metro on the Orange Line.

Grandsons Go Wild

The Grandsons break out into Grandsons Junior mode with a kids' concert this (rainy?) Saturday at Jammin Java in beautiful but flawed suburban Vienna, VA. Their motto is "wild music for wild kids." I haven't met a kid yet that comes under the category of "tame" so this should be a fun show. Make sure you get there by the godawful (but not if you are a parent) hour of 10 AM ( in the morning.)

Sometimes You Do Get A Second Chance

Mardi Gras has come and gone, but the Maritime Republic of Eastport has a fine reputation for doing things their own way which in the past has included a sock burning ceremony and celebrating Mardi Gras whenever they get the notion. This week they are throwing a hellatious party called The Ambassador’s (Other) Ball which will happen at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 6.

Little Red & The Renegades with Alan & Chris of The Grandsons will be playing the event and special guest ‘Texas Fred’ Carter, the Zydeco Cowboy, of WPFW-FM (89.3) will be there as well. The $25 admission includes a buffet serving Cajun and other food specialties, plus draft beer, soft drinks-door prizes, costume & dance judging.

Best of all - the proceeds will benefit the Annapolis Musicians Funding Musicians & the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic.

It's a good day indeed to wake up in a town that passed a gay marriage bill despite rumblings that Congress or the Supreme Court might step in to block the legalisation. All over the country gay right bills are stalled in the name of semantics on what a "marriage" should be, but D.C. got it done rather than let prejudice prevail- although the battles still aren't over.
This week Catholic Charities hastily dropped its spousal benefits and last month transferred its foster care program as a direct response to the passing of the bill. Marriage may mean different things to different people, but in the eyes of the law, better to err on the side of freedom and justice for all than argue the thing into the ground.
Let freedom ring.
